Recapping the Late Shift

Move BITCH, Get Out The Way
(via The Argus Leader)
We've had a ridiculous amount of action today.  Tomorrow it stays crazy, and then starts ramping down.

Bethune-Cookman 62, South Carolina State 53
Bethune-Cookman advances to MEAC Quarterfinals
-South Carolina State ends the season with zero conference wins as Bethune-Cookman never let the game get close in the second half.  BC will play North Carolina Central (17-14, 10-6) tomorrow.  The Wildcats lost both regular season matchups with the Eagles.

LaSalle 80, Richmond 72
Explorers advance to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals
-LaSalle was in control the entire nigtht as they end a rare down year for Richmond.  The Explorers will move on to play the Atlantic 10 2 seed, St. Louis (24-6, 12-4).  St. Louis won the regular season match up.

St. Joseph's 80, Charlotte 64
Hawks advance to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals
-St. Joe's had 5 guys with double figures led by Carl Jones' 23 to sink the Niners in Philadelphia.  The Hawks will play 3 seed St. Bonaventure (17-11, 10-6).  The Bonnies won in double overtime in their lone regular season matchup.

Massachusetts 92, Duquesne 83
Minutemen advance to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals
-Duquesne couldn't keep pace with the Minutemen who run them out of the gym while three players go for 20+.  The Minutemen will move on to play the top seed #24 Temple (24-6, 13-3).  The Owls beat UMass 90-88 in overtime in their regular season matchup in Philly.

Dayton 67, George Washington 50
Flyers advance to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals
-Led by Devin Oliver, the Flyers took care of business at home against GWU.  They will play 4 seed Xavier (19-11, 10-6) in the next round.  The two have traded wins, the last coming February 18th which resulted in an overtime victory for the Musketeers.

Western Kentucky 74, North Texas 70
Western Kentucky wins the Sun Belt Championship; Advance to NCAA Tournament
-With a losing record, the Hilltoppers are still going to dance.  Their date may not be pretty, but dammit they're going to Prom nonetheless.  Teeng Akol is a man, and you remember that Tony Mitchell.  North Texas still can't get to the tourney, plagued by misfortune after last year's upset by Arkansas-Little Rock.  Besides, you had to think that the Hilltoppers would get some positive karma after this mess:

Seton Hall 79, Providence 47
Pirates advance to the Big East 2nd Round
-Nobody fucking cares.  Seton Hall still needs to win the next round, but Jesus, did anyone expect Providence to show up?

Weber State 69, Portland State 63
Wildcats advance to the Big Sky Championship
-Weber State looked to have overlooked the Vikings, but then they kicked it into gear late.  Coming back from what looked to be the dead in Missoula, the Wildcats advance to play the winner of Eastern Washington and Montana later tonight.

Princeton 62, Pennsylvania 52
Quakers season ends, Harvard gets Ivy League Autobid.
-Ian Hummer should get all sorts of gifts from Harvard fans.  Crimson get to go to the dance, Penn is grounded.  Ivy League season ends anti-climatically.

Villanova 70, Rutgers 49
Wildcats advance to the Big East 2nd Round
-Nova rides Maalik Wayans' 28 and cruise past the Scarlet Knights.  Nova will play South Florida (19-12, 12-6) tomorrow night at MSG.  They have lost both games to the Bulls this season.

Florida A&M 74, Coppin State 72
Rattlers advance to the MEAC Quarterfinals
-A tandem effort by Stevens & Moore lead Florida A&M past the Eagles in a nail biter.  Florida A&M will play Delaware State (15-13, 12-4) in the Quarterfinals.  The Hornets won the previous meeting in conference play.

South Dakota State 52, Western Illinois 50 (OT)
South Dakota State wins the Summit League Championship; Advance to NCAA Tournament
-The Jacks off Western Illinois to jack their first NCAA Tournament bid in school history.  In a game that went into overtime, the Jacks used stingy defense and well timed shooting to advance to the tournament.

Detroit 68, Valparaiso 50
Detroit wins the Horizon League Championship; Advance to NCAA Tournament
-The upset of the night leaves the Crusaders on the outside looking in to get into the Big Dance.  The Titans pulled away late led by Ray McCallum's 19 point effort.  This is the Titans first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997.

Montana 74, Eastern Washington 64
advances to the Big Sky Tournament Championship
-Kareem Jamar overcame his early struggles to keep Montana in the game long enough for Will Cherry to defy physics and physiology to bury the Eagles late.  The Grizzlies went on a 13-2 run in the final 1:45 to overcome Cliff Colimon's 27 point effort.  Montana once again finds themselves in the Big Sky Tournament Championship, and will play Weber State in a clash of the titans.  These two teams have split the season series in a couple blow outs.
